Why Does My Cat Knock Everything Off the Table?
🐾 It Started With Rebel
Rebel isn’t allowed on the table.
That doesn’t stop her.
Our living room has a glass coffee table, which means she has a perfect view of everything sitting on top of it.
She’ll crouch underneath it, stare at whatever has caught her attention, and then…
Whack.
A pen.
A bottle cap.
A receipt.
Whatever happens to be within reach.
Before long, it’s on the floor.
Sometimes I don’t even see it happen.
I’ll just hear something hit the floor from the other room and think,
“Rebel…”
It made me wonder…
Why do cats seem so determined to knock everything off the table?
🤔 Why Do Cats Knock Things Off the Table?
It turns out Rebel isn’t trying to redecorate the house.
Cats knock things over for several different reasons. Curiosity, play, hunting instincts, attention, and boredom can all play a role.
Here are some of the most common reasons:
👀 They’re Curious
1. Spot something interesting.
2. Get it onto the floor.
It didn’t take Rebel long to discover that our glass coffee table gives her a perfect view of whatever is sitting on top.
If something catches her eye, she’ll sit underneath it, stare for a moment, and start reaching up with her paws to see what happens next.
To her, it’s probably an investigation.
To me…
It’s usually the beginning of something ending up on the floor.
Cats don’t just explore the world with their eyes and noses—they use their paws, too.
A gentle tap tells them whether something moves, rolls, makes a sound, or is interesting enough to investigate further.
🎯 Hunting Instincts
Even indoor cats have powerful hunting instincts.
When something slides across a table or falls to the floor, it mimics the movement of prey, making it irresistible to investigate.
👀 They Want Your Attention
Let’s be honest…
If your cat knocks your favorite pen onto the floor…
…you’re probably going to look at them.
Mission accomplished.
Some cats quickly learn that knocking things over is an excellent way to get their human’s attention.
🧩 They’re Bored
Cats need mental stimulation.
If they don’t have enough opportunities to climb, play, hunt, or explore, the objects on your table may become their entertainment.
😹 Because…They’re Cats
Sometimes there isn’t a deep scientific explanation.
Some cats simply enjoy watching things fall.
Is It Normal?
Most of the time…
Yes.
Knocking the occasional object off a table is completely normal cat behavior.
However, if your cat suddenly begins knocking things over repeatedly after never doing it before, or if it’s accompanied by other unusual behaviors, it may be worth discussing with your veterinarian.
What Can You Do?
Instead of constantly saying “No,” try giving your cat something more interesting to do.

- Provide climbing spaces like cat trees or shelves.
