Why Is My Cat Hiding?
It Started With Rebel…
Most days, Rebel likes to know exactly what everyone in the house is doing.
If I’m folding laundry…
She’s there.
If I’m cooking dinner…
She’s right behind me.
If I sit down for five minutes…
She somehow knows.
So when I realized I hadn’t seen her for a while, I started looking around the house.
Eventually, I found her tucked away under a blanket, completely hidden from the world.
At first, I smiled.
Sometimes cats just like cozy places.
But it also made me wonder…
When is hiding perfectly normal… and when should it be a reason to worry?
Why Do Cats Hide?
Cats hide for many perfectly normal reasons.
Sometimes they’re simply looking for:
- a quiet place to nap
- warmth
- privacy
- a break from household activity
Many cats also hide when new people visit or when something changes in their environment.
When Is Hiding Normal?
It’s usually nothing to worry about if your cat:
- still comes out to eat
- uses the litter box normally
- plays as usual
- greets you like they normally do
- returns to their regular routine after a while
Some cats simply enjoy having a safe place that’s all their own.
When Could Hiding Be a Sign Something Is Wrong?
Pay closer attention if your cat is hiding and:
- won’t eat
- seems painful
- is unusually quiet
- has trouble walking
- is vomiting
- has diarrhea
- struggles to breathe
- suddenly starts hiding much more than usual
A sudden change in behavior deserves attention.
What Can You Do?
Instead of forcing your cat out of hiding:
- Let them come out on their own.
- Make sure fresh food and water are available nearby.
- Keep the environment quiet.
- Observe for other symptoms.
- Contact your veterinarian if you’re concerned.
What About Rebel?
Thankfully, Rebel wasn’t hiding because she was sick.
She had simply found the coziest spot in the house.
Apparently, blankets are one of her favorite places to disappear.
Finding her curled up underneath one has become one of those little moments that always makes me smile.
What I’ve Learned From Rebel
Living with Rebel has taught me that hiding isn’t always a bad thing.
Sometimes it’s simply a cat being a cat.
The important part is paying attention to what else is happening.
Is your cat eating?
Playing?
Greeting you?
Acting like themselves?
Those answers often tell you far more than the hiding itself.
