It all started on what seemed like a perfectly normal day.
It was the day before my birthday in 2021.
My husband called me from work and told me he was going to take one of his co-workers home because her car had broken down.
I remember thinking, “Well, that’s nice of him.”
Now, here’s an important detail. We have one of those location-sharing apps that lets us see where the other person is. After a while, I checked to see if he was almost home.
He wasn’t.
He had driven quite a ways, which made sense if he was taking someone home.
But then…
He stayed there.
Five minutes.
Ten minutes.
Twenty minutes.
By this point, I was beginning to wonder what was taking so long.
So, I called him.
He assured me everything was fine. They had just been talking, and he said he was about to leave.
Okay… fair enough.
Except…
He didn’t leave.
Fifteen more minutes passed.
By now my imagination was working overtime.
I’d never met this co-worker before. I didn’t know anything about her, and suddenly my mind was filling in all the blanks. And none of the possibilities were good.
Finally, I saw that he was on his way home.
Relieved, I called him one more time.
He laughed, told me there was nothing to worry about, and promised he’d explain everything when he got home.
Easy for him to say.
I spent the rest of the afternoon wondering what in the world was going on.
Then I heard his truck pull into the driveway.
A few moments later, he walked through the front door…
…carrying a box?

What’s in the box?
He held the box out in front of him, motioning for me to open it.
Both anxious and excited, I lifted the first flap.
I still couldn’t see inside.
Curiosity was getting the best of me.
I folded back another flap, but from my angle the box looked empty.
Then, as I pulled back the last two flaps…
…all I saw was pink.
It looked like a little satin blanket.
Pretty… but confusing.
So I leaned in a little closer.
That’s when I saw her.

A tiny little face looking up at me.
I swear we imprinted in that moment.
She was this beautiful little ball of fur, only five weeks old. When I picked her up, she was barely bigger than my hand.
I fell in love instantly.
It wasn’t just an amazing birthday surprise.
It was the beginning of an adventure I never knew I needed.
The sweetest part of all?
My husband is allergic to cats.
I’ll never forget that moment—not just because I met Rebel, but because I realized how much my husband loved me. He knew how badly I wanted a cat, and despite his allergies, he gave me the greatest birthday surprise I could have imagined.
To this day, I still think it was the best birthday present I’ve ever received.
Little did I know, that tiny kitten would grow into the mischievous, funny, affectionate cat who would eventually inspire The Cat Chronicles.
Looking back now, it’s funny to think that one tiny kitten, tucked away inside a cardboard box, would eventually inspire an entire website. Every story you’ll read here began with that moment—and with one curious little cat named Rebel.
Welcome to The Cat Chronicles. I’m so glad you’re here.
🐾 Continue the Adventure
Rebel has plenty more stories to tell…
Whether she’s following me from room to room, testing gravity one object at a time, or getting into a little harmless mischief, there’s always another adventure waiting.
Where will Rebel take you next?
