Why Is My Cat Sleeping So Much?
It Started With Rebel…
One afternoon, I realized something felt… different.
Rebel had been sleeping under a blanket for most of the day.
Normally, she’s following me from room to room, supervising everything I do, or finding some new way to entertain herself.
But this time…
She barely moved.
I remember checking on her several times.
Each time she was still curled up in the same spot.
That’s when my mind started racing.
Was she just having a lazy day… or was something wrong?
As it turns out…
Cats sleep a lot.
But there are times when extra sleep deserves a closer look.

How Much Do Cats Normally Sleep?
If you’ve ever wondered whether your cat sleeps too much, you’re not alone.
Healthy adult cats typically sleep 12 to 16 hours a day, and some may sleep even longer depending on their age and activity level.
Kittens and senior cats often need even more rest.
So yes…
Cats really are professional nappers.

Why Do Cats Sleep So Much?
๐ด It’s Natural
Cats are built to conserve energy.
Even indoor cats still have the instincts of their wild ancestors, who spent bursts of energy hunting before resting for long periods.
๐ง๏ธ Weather Can Affect Sleep
Have you ever noticed your cat sleeping more on a rainy or gloomy day?
Many owners do.
Just like people, some cats seem less active when the weather changes.
๐ฑ Age Matters
Kittens are growing rapidly, so they spend much of the day sleeping.
Senior cats also tend to rest more as they age.
๐ฒ Boredom
Indoor cats sometimes sleep simply because…
There’s nothing more exciting to do.
Adding climbing trees, puzzle feeders, toys, and interactive playtime can help keep them mentally stimulated.
When Should You Be Concerned?
Sleeping itself usually isn’t the problem.
A change in your cat’s normal routine is what deserves attention.
If your cat is sleeping much more than usual and you notice things like:
- refusing food
- hiding constantly
- vomiting
- difficulty walking
- trouble breathing
- acting confused
- loss of interest in favorite activities
It’s a good idea to contact your veterinarian.
What Can You Do?
If your cat seems healthy but is sleeping more than usual:
- Encourage playtime.
- Offer puzzle toys.
- Check that they’re eating and drinking normally.
- Monitor their behavior closely if they otherwise seem healthy and are acting normally when awake.
If anything feels unusual or continues to worry you, call your veterinarian.
What About Rebel?
Thankfully, Rebel was back to her normal self by the next day.
She went right back to following me around the house, supervising laundry, and making sure I never walked into the kitchen alone.
That experience reminded me of something important.
It’s not always about how much your cat sleeps.
It’s about whether your cat is acting like themselves.
What I’ve Learned From Rebel
Living with Rebel has taught me that routines matter.
When your cat does the same funny little things every day, you notice when something changes.
Sometimes it’s nothing more than a lazy afternoon.
Other times…
Your instincts tell you something isn’t quite right.
I’ve learned to trust those instincts.
No one knows your cat better than you do.
