Why Does My Cat Carry Toys Around the House?
It Started With Rebel…
Every now and then, the house fills with the saddest little cry.
If you didn’t know better, you’d think something terrible had happened.
“Meow…”
“Meow…”
“Meow…”
The first few times, I went looking for Rebel because I thought she was hurt.
Instead…
She had her favorite stuffed “baby” in her mouth.
She’d walk through the house crying the entire time she carried it.
Sometimes she’d wander from room to room looking for it first, calling out until she finally found it.
Then, once she had it safely in her mouth, she’d proudly carry it upstairs.
Almost every single time.
Sometimes she’d bring it into our bedroom.
Other times she’d leave it at the top of the stairs—one of her favorite sleeping spots.
I started wondering…
Why does she do this?
So… Why Do Cats Carry Toys Around?
Believe it or not, this is actually a common cat behavior.
Cats may carry toys for several reasons, including:
- Practicing their natural hunting behaviors.
- Treating the toy like a prized possession.
- Carrying it somewhere they consider safe.
- Seeking attention or interaction.
- Simply because they enjoy it.
Every cat has their own reason—and sometimes it’s probably a combination of several.

Why Do Cats Meow While Carrying Toys?
This is one of my favorite parts because it’s so dramatic.
Some cats become unusually vocal while carrying a toy.
No one knows exactly why every cat does it. Vocalizing while carrying a toy may be part of the excitement of the behavior, an attempt to get attention, or simply another way that particular cat expresses themselves.
Whatever the reason…
It certainly gets your attention.
So… What Is Rebel Doing?
I can’t know exactly what’s going through Rebel’s mind.
But after watching her for years…
I have my own little theory.
She always carries her baby upstairs.
Usually into our bedroom.
Or she leaves it right at the top of the stairs where she likes to sleep.
Part of me likes to imagine she’s bringing it somewhere safe…
Somewhere close to her family.
Maybe she’s protecting us.
Maybe she’s protecting her baby.
Or maybe…
She just knows exactly where she wants it.
Whatever the reason, it’s become one of those little routines that makes Rebel… well… Rebel.
What I’ve Learned From Rebel
Cats don’t always need a reason that makes perfect sense to us.
Sometimes the little habits that seem the strangest are simply part of who they are.
So if your cat proudly parades through the house with a stuffed mouse in their mouth while singing the song of their people…
Don’t worry.
You’re probably just witnessing one of the most wonderfully cat-like behaviors there is.
