Why Does My Cat Sleep Under the Covers?
It Started With Rebel…
Every winter, bedtime follows the same routine.
I climb into bed.
Pull up the blankets.
Get comfortable.
Then I wait.
Sure enough…
A tiny little nose appears.
Rebel patiently waits for just enough space to slip underneath the covers.
Once she’s in, she circles around a few times before settling down right beside me.
Sometimes she’ll press one little paw against my leg.
Other times, she simply curls up against me like that’s exactly where she belongs.
I’ve always thought it was adorable.
But it also made me wonder…
Why do some cats love sleeping under the covers?

❤️ It’s a Sign of Trust
Sleeping is a vulnerable time for cats.
Choosing to sleep beside—or underneath the blankets with—their favorite human can be a sign that they feel safe and secure.
⚠️ Is It Safe?
For most cats, sleeping under the covers is perfectly safe—as long as they can come and go whenever they want.
Some cats simply enjoy the warmth, security, and closeness of sleeping next to their favorite person.
However, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- Never force your cat to stay under the blankets.
- Make sure they can easily get out if they become too warm.
- Be mindful when changing positions in bed so you don’t accidentally roll onto them.
- If your cat seems uncomfortable, overheated, or wants to leave, let them come out on their own.
As long as your cat has the freedom to move around and seems happy and relaxed, sharing the blankets is usually just another way they choose to spend time with you.
What About Rebel?
Every winter, she somehow finds her way under the blankets.
I don’t even have to invite her anymore.
She knows the routine better than I do.
There’s just something comforting about feeling one tiny paw resting against my leg while she sleeps.
It reminds me that, for whatever reason, she has decided that’s one of the safest places in the world.
What I’ve Learned From Rebel
Living with Rebel has taught me that cats have countless little ways of saying, “I trust you.”
Sometimes it’s following you from room to room.
Sometimes it’s carrying a favorite toy through the house.
And sometimes…
It’s choosing to spend the night curled up under the blankets beside you.
Those quiet little moments are often the ones I treasure most.
