It Started With Rebel…
If Rebel had her way, she’d convince everyone in the house she hadn’t eaten in days.
The funny thing is…
She always has dry food available.
I leave a bowl out for her, and she nibbles throughout the day whenever she’s hungry.
So when she follows me into the kitchen with those big hopeful eyes, I can’t help but laugh.
“Nice try, Rebel… I can still see the food in your bowl.”
But it did make me wonder…
Is leaving food out all day actually a good idea?
Or should cats be fed on a schedule instead?
The answer depends on the cat.

For some cats…
Yes.
Free-feeding (leaving dry food available throughout the day) works well for healthy cats that naturally regulate how much they eat.
Some cats take a few bites, walk away, and come back later.

Would happily empty the bowl in one sitting.

What About Wet Food?

🐱 So… What About Rebel?
Rebel has always done well with free-feeding.
She’ll wander over, eat a little, then go back to one of her many important daily responsibilities…
Like supervising laundry.
Or watching birds from the window.
Or making sure I don’t go anywhere without an escort.
Because she’s never been the type to overeat, leaving a measured amount of dry food available has worked well for her.
Every cat is different, though, and what works for Rebel may not be the best choice for every household.
What I’ve Learned From Rebel
When I first brought Rebel home, I wasn’t sure if leaving food out all day was the right thing to do.
Over time, I realized there isn’t one perfect answer.
The best feeding routine is the one that keeps your cat healthy, maintains a healthy weight, and fits both your lifestyle and your cat’s personality.
For Rebel…
That means a measured amount of dry food she’s free to nibble on throughout the day.
Of course…
She’ll still act like breakfast never happened.
