How Much Water Should My Cat Drink?
It Started With Rebel…
One thing I’ve learned about living with a cat…
They don’t always make it easy to know if they’re drinking enough water.
Rebel has a water bowl that’s always available, but if you asked me exactly how much she drinks every day…
I honestly couldn’t tell you.
Some days it seems like she hardly touches it.
Other days I notice the water level is much lower than I expected.
That got me wondering…
How much water should a cat actually drink?
The answer depends on more than you might think.

Why Water Matters
Cats naturally have a lower thirst drive than many other animals.
Their wild ancestors got much of their water from the prey they hunted, which means some cats still don’t drink as much as we expect.
That’s one reason hydration is so important to pay attention to.
How Much Water Does a Cat Need?
A healthy cat’s water needs depend on several factors, including:
- body size
- activity level
- diet
- age
- weather
A commonly used general guideline is around 4 ounces of total water per 5 pounds of body weight per day. That includes water from drinking as well as moisture in food, so a cat eating wet food may drink considerably less from the bowl than a cat eating primarily dry food. Individual needs can vary based on factors such as age, activity, diet, health, and environment.
Signs Your Cat May Not Be Drinking Enough
- lethargy
- weakness
- poor appetite
- dry/tacky mucous membranes
- sunken eyes
- decreased skin elasticity
Keep in mind that skin elasticity isn’t a perfect test of hydration, particularly in older cats. If you suspect your cat is dehydrated or isn’t acting normally, contact your veterinarian.
How to Encourage Your Cat to Drink More
- Always provide fresh, clean water.
- Place water bowls in several locations.
- Wash bowls regularly.
- Try a cat water fountain.
- Feed wet food if appropriate.
- Keep water away from the litter box.

Some cats are more interested in moving water than a bowl of still water. The Wonder Creature Stainless Steel Cat Water Fountain can be a simple way to make fresh water more appealing and encourage your cat to drink throughout the day.
When Should You Call the Veterinarian?
A sudden change in how much your cat drinks can be worth paying attention to. If your cat suddenly starts drinking much more—or much less—than usual, especially if you notice changes in urination, appetite, weight, or energy, talk with your veterinarian.
What About Rebel?
Rebel has never been a big, obvious drinker.
She’s one of those cats who quietly takes a sip here and there, and if I wasn’t paying attention, I’d probably assume she hardly drinks at all.
That experience has taught me something simple:
Just because you don’t always see your cat drinking doesn’t mean they’re not.
The important part is noticing changes in their normal routine.
What I’ve Learned From Rebel
Living with Rebel has reminded me that the little things matter.
It’s easy to focus on food, toys, and playtime, but something as simple as fresh water plays an important role in keeping our cats healthy.
I may never know exactly how many sips Rebel takes each day…
But I do know that paying attention to the little changes can make a big difference.
